#14 Save the Earth

SOL # 14 out of 31
Saving the Earth

Little 3rd ,4th and 5th graders are doing their part to "Save our Earth".  I am so excited!!! We started  the composting program at our school today! Friday we began the initiative with a kick-off assembly that preached the importance of recycling and showed the students how they are going to be able to help. Our Primary elementary participated last year. Therefore our 3rd graders know the system already.
Starting today, instead of dumping everything on their tray into the trash, students put leftover food scraps and other plant-based materials (like napkins, straw wrappers, etc) in the compost bin. Then they placed plastics and cardboard items (milk cartons, yogurt containers, applesauce cups, lunchable trays, etc) in the recycling bin. Finally students threw only the few remaining items into the trash (now officially labeled “LANDFILL” in bright RED letters because they need to understand that is where those items are going.)

A local gardening company will pick up our school’s composting container and turn it into rich, fertile soil in just 12 short weeks. Of course, the recycling bin will be taken to the recycling company. We hope to reduce our waste stream by 80%. In fact, last year the 5 participating Missouri schools diverted over 50 tons of waste from going into landfills!
Isn't that exciting? !
