Am I smarter than a 5th grader?

Am I smarter than a 5th grader?
Well, the official “Looping” letter went home with my 4th graders today reminding them of their opportunity they have  to continue with me as their teacher  for 5th grade next year.  I love my kiddos and am really excited to keep a group of students for two whole school years.  I can’t imagine all of the benefits.  The only thing I am nervous about is changing grade levels. I’ve always only been a 4th grade teacher.  Will I be smarter than a 5th grader? (remember that TV show)
The saving grace is I am also team teaching with a teacher this year that is looping with me to 5th grade next year and she is formerly a 5th grade teacher.  This also means that she will be teaching all of the ELA and I will only have to teach the Math, Science and SS for 5th grade.  Working with a new group of teachers will be great I am sure.  Bring on the challenge and let’s hope for the best!! If you have any advice for looping with a class, let me know!

  1. Wow, you are brave! I actually think you've got the hard part - Math for 5th grade - yikes! Just remember, it is okay to make mistakes - even when teaching 5th grade math! Best of luck to you and congrats on taking on this challenge!

    1. Crazy! I love reading and writing but I love helping kids understand Math too!! Team teaching has helped me have a focus and for next year it is the Math and Science.

  2. I think it's great that you're challenging yourself, especially in front of students who know you. They will get to see you as a learner AND a teacher next year, and that's a great role model to exhibit!

    1. Thanks for reading and commenting. After 15 years of teaching the same grade level in the same school I think that I am a ready for challenge and to stretch myself.
